Join Smt Maneka Gandhi, MP, and Tell Puerto Rico to Stop Monkey-Breeding Facility
PETA India is joining leading Indian lawmaker Smt Maneka Gandhi, MP, and animal protection groups around the world in opposing the construction of a monkey-breeding facility in Puerto Rico. Bioculture, a company that sells primates to laboratories, reportedly wants to capture monkeys from their natural homes in Mauritius, imprison them in Puerto Rico and sell their babies for use in experiments.
Gandhi has fired off a letter to Governor Luis Fortuño of Puerto Rico urging him to oppose the building of the massive Bioculture monkey-breeding facility in Guayama, Puerto Rico, which will ship the babies of the captured monkeys to laboratories for traumatic experiments.
Gandhi wrote: "Bioculture will force thousands of intelligent monkeys to suffer severe mental and social deprivation in captivity, endure cramped and filthy conditions during transport that spans thousands of miles, and ingest toxic chemicals in foreign pharmaceutical laboratories—many of which have been given government fines for abusing monkeys and violating animal protection laws".
Please send a polite e-mail to Puerto Rican Governor Luis Fortuño as well as Congressmember Pedro Pierluisi and his staff asking them to put a stop to the construction of the monkey-breeding facility. Let them know that allowing such cruelty to root itself on Puerto Rico's shores will degrade the commonwealth's international standing.
Please customize the subject line and body of the letter because it will be more effective in getting the target's attention.
