Pledge to Practice Your ABCs: Animal Birth Control!
Homelessness isn't just a human problem. All over India, stray dogs and cats starve to death, are injured or killed in fights, are hit by vehicles, or are abused by cruel people on the streets in urban slums and rural areas. Countless other animals end up in animal shelters because there aren't enough good homes for them. You can help prevent these tragedies. It's as easy as ABC—animal birth control!
Who's to Blame?
The stray dog population can survive because of the exposed garbage and large slum-dwelling population in India, but breeders, pet stores, and people who don't spay and neuter their animals are to blame for animals who end up homeless in the first place. Every time someone buys a dog or cat from a breeder or pet store, a homeless animal roaming the streets or waiting in an animal shelter loses a chance at a home – and a chance at a good life. As long as animals are still suffering because of the lack of homes, no breeding can be considered "responsible."
Killing Isn't the Solution
Some governments have tried to deal with the stray dog problem by relocating or even killing dogs. Not only is this cruel, it's also ineffective, because dogs from surrounding areas simply move in to take the place of those who were killed, and they reproduce – creating even more homeless dogs. Dogfights increase because of mating and because every time a new dog enters the territory, he or she is attacked by the dogs who are already living there.
Goal: A No-Birth Nation
The solution is simple: animal birth control. Spaying one female dog can prevent 67,000 births in six years, and spaying one female cat can prevent 420,000 births in seven years – animals who will never suffer and never end up abandoned on the streets or dumped at animal shelters. Sterilised animals also live healthier, longer lives and are less likely to roam, fight or bite. Puppies and kittens can be safely sterilised at 8 weeks of age!
